Assess your Competition
As a beginning poker player you need to do several things in order to speed up your learning process. Of course, you should not get too ahead of yourself, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to move forward so that you can make the most out of your time. One area that you should be concerned with is the ability to assess your competition. But before you get all wrapped up in this there is one thing that you should remember. What your competition is doing is not more important than what you are doing. If you start paying more attention to them than your own cards you will notice that your rate of success is beginning to go down hill as well.
You should begin to assess your competition the second that they sit down at the poker table. Look at who they are, as well as how they act. This may seem innocent enough, but it could go a long way in helping you to form opposing strategies that may help you to come out on top.

As you continue to play you will want to watch your competition so that you can get an idea of what there strategy is all about. If you find out that one player in particular likes to bluff a lot you should keep this in the back of your mind. Several hands later you may be able to use this to your advantage to win a large pot. Many beginners make the mistake of noticing fine details such as this, but simply forgetting about them after one hand. You don’t want to get preoccupied with these things, but at the same time you do need to make sure that you keep them in the back of your mind for future use.
When playing online poker it is a bit more difficult to assess your competition. Do you know the reason for this? Quite simply, when you play online you cannot see your opponents. For this reason you may have a more difficult time getting a hold on what they do, as well as what type of strategy they use. This is why you should never try to use your table poker strategy when playing online. Since the two types of games are so different you will only end up getting yourself in trouble.
Finally, remember that while you are assessing the competition they are also watching you. Make sure that you do your best to cover up any habits that you have. If you do not do this a good poker player will notice and take advantage of you time and time again. Do not spend a lot of time worrying if others are watching you. But make sure that you do keep this in mind so that you do not end up giving them more help than you want.
Playing poker is all about knowing your strategy, and being able to beat the competition. While this may become easier as you get more experienced, early on you will have a tough time fighting through the growing pains. But remember, as time goes on you will get better at assessing your competition. And when you do this you will notice a direct reflection in how much money you are winning.
